The University of the Philippines Visayas (UP Visayas) officially launched TukiBása: The UP Visayas Language Program Reading Corner today, September 8, 2026. Initiated by the Language Program Office of the College of Arts and Sciences, the project seeks to bring current and contemporary children’s and young adult literature closer to UP Visayas students and constituents by making these resources more accessible within the university community.
The reading corner features a diverse collection of books in Philippine languages, including Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Aklanon, Cebuano, Maguindanaon, Maranao, Ilocano, Waray, Ifugao, and others, underscoring the country’s rich linguistic and literary diversity.
TukiBása is located in two venues: the UP Visayas Language Program Office and the UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) Library. The collection at the UPHSI Library will be available until Friday, while the books at the Language Program Office will remain accessible throughout the year to interested readers. More than simply providing access to books, the project seeks to cultivate a stronger reading culture within the university by encouraging students and other members of the community to engage with contemporary literature, appreciate Philippine languages, and recognize reading as an important means of sustaining cultural and linguistic diversity.
