U.P. Visayas University Library’s literacy project reaches 5 more schools in Miagao

Five elementary schools in Miagao West, Iloilo, received books and stuffed toys from the University Library’s extension service, Philippine Literacy Project: Building Libraries for the Future spearheaded by Ms. Analiza S. Galang-Linaugo, University of the Philippines Visayas University Librarian, in collaboration with Mr. Zyrel T. Rojo and Mrs. Jhoanna Gorriceta-Rojo, UP alumni and donors. The turnover ceremony took place on June 29, 2026, at the UPV University Library, Miagao Campus.

The literacy project aims to fill the gap in access to quality reading materials and develop comprehension and genuine love for reading. In her opening remarks, Ms. Anna Lisa M. Erazo, College Librarian (CAS Library), mentioned that “the donated books are like bridges that will connect the students of Miagao to ideas from around the world.”

Ms. Galang-Linaugo delivered the inspirational message on behalf of Ms. Rojo who is currently based in California, USA. The message conveyed objectives to bring donations to 39 DepEd public schools in Miagao, including 31 elementary schools and 8 national high schools. To Rojo, the donated items are tools of hope and keys to a brighter future. She acknowledged the contributions and support of the UPV administrators led by Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, volunteers (UPV Ugnayan ng Pahinungod/Oblation Corps), the UPV University Library Team steered by Ms. Galang-Linaugo, and the DepEd Miagao school administrators and representatives. Ms. Rojo concluded her message motivating the students to aspire big dreams through those books as education is their tool for greatness.

The event also featured Book Care Tips 101 facilitated by Mr Arvee A. Paguntalan, Library staff, which highlighted proper handling of books to preserve their lifespan for future generation use.

Ms. Jane Bernadette A. Sansolis, Staff-in-Charge of donations, facilitated the signing of documents. School representatives received and signed the receipt of books and other learning materials in the presence of Ms. Galang-Linaugo and Rosemarie M. Canson, College Librarian (Technical Section).

The 5 recipient schools and its respective representatives include:
Alimodias Elementary School, led by Joewel Faling with Analiza Genille;
Cadoldolan Integrated School, headed by Rosario Nido with Gladys Mupada;
Igbita-Tigmalapad Elementary School, led by Ma. Cristina Mondia with Denzil Faling;
Ilog-Ilog Elementary School, led by Edgar Domingo with Ma. Yllieza Molining and Lord Zydric Faling; and
Naclub Elementary School, headed by Rey Mones with Geraldine Nanta

Mr. Paguntalan communicated with Dr. Rigardo G. Girado, Public School District Supervisor of Miagao West for the selection of the first 5 recipient schools in Miagao, while Ms. Sansolis prepared the donations to facilitate the turnover ceremony.

During the message of acceptance, the school representatives expressed their gratitude for the educational items received. According to Mr. Faling of Alimodias Elementary School, the donations were a timely replacement for some of their termite-infested books. Despite the school facility limitations, the recipient schools ensured to designate a place for the donated items where students can read and learn.

Ms. Elsa S. Surmieda, College Librarian (CFOS Library), capped off the event with her closing remarks emphasizing that education is a shared responsibility, hoping that the donation nurtures wisdom and strengthens the bonds of the community.

The Philippine Literacy Project: Building Libraries for the Future kicked off on January 9, 2026, at Olango Integrated School, Brgy. Olango, Miagao, Iloilo, its first recipient school.
