The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) University Library joined the ceremony that recognized Makinaugalingon’s archival newspapers. The newspapers were inscribed in the National Register of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Philippine Memory of the World. The event held by the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM), took place on February 23, 2026, at the Ker & Co. Building, Ortiz St., Iloilo City.
Ms. Analiza S. Galang Linaugo, University Librarian, attended the event accompanied by librarians and staff, Ms. Prosamel N. Salcedo, and Ms. Ma. Yvonne E. Genciane, and Ms. Jo Ann C. Sadia. They witnessed the milestone of the oldest and longest-running Hiligaynon newspaper in Iloilo during the pre-World War II period.
The late Don Rosendo Madrazo Mejica founded the Makinaugalingon. He was an accountant, journalist, educator, and public servant. The Makinaugalingon’s 30 volumes spanning 1913-1941, 1946, and 1952 were conferred with the aforementioned recognition. Ms. Pilar Mejica-Martinez, heir of Mejica, along with other descendants, received the award on behalf of the publication. The archival documents are housed at the Rosendo Mejica Historical Landmark in Iloilo City, making them vital resources for historians, students, and researchers.
City government officials, academics, and members from different sectors attended the ceremony. This support marks a proud moment for Iloilo, highlighting the rich history, culture, and tradition of the Ilonggos.
The University Library’s presence in the inscription of Makinaugalingon underscores its commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, as the awarded publication was a great example of a repository of Iloilo’s vibrant history.
