UP Fisheries Guild successfully organizes quiz show and on-the-spot poster making contest

The UP Fisheries Guild, in coordination with the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), formally concluded the 35th Inter-High School Quiz Show and the 36th On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest held last February 18, 2026, at the SOTECH AV Hall, University of the Philippines Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo.

The event served as a platform for the representatives from 20 participating schools across the Province of Iloilo to engage with the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries curriculum, fostering academic excellence and environmental awareness.

The Inter-High School Quiz Show provided a rigorous assessment of students’ knowledge in various subjects, such as Math, Science, General Information, and Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, emphasizing technical proficiency and analytical precision. Complementing the academic competition, the On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest, with the theme “Floods of Voices: Fights Against Tyranny, where Resilience Should Not Substitute Accountability” require participants to translate issues about flood control project anomalies into visual representations, shedding light to one of the most pressing controversies of today. Both events underscore the University’s commitment to developing the next generation of professionals dedicated to the sustainable management of aquatic resources.

Securing the top spot of the Inter-High School Quiz Show – Individual Category was Matthew Uy of Iloilo Scholastic Academy, followed by Jose Manuel Simpas of Sta. Barbara National Comprehensive High School in second place and Steve Matthew Baldeviso of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in third place. Recognition is also extended to finalists Joshua Angelao Escosar and Jerheymiah Nico Niadas for their outstanding performance.

For the Group Category, Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School seized the top spot, while Iloilo Scholastic Academy and Pavia National High School earned second and third-place, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the 36th On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest, Cambitu National High School emerged as the first-place winner, followed by Sta. Barbara National Comprehensive High School who took the second-place spot, and Guimbal National High School as third.

Ultimately, the discipline and intellectual rigor displayed by these students reflect the high standards of their respective schools and their potential as future leaders in the scientific community. Moreover, these events further emphasize the UP Fisheries Guild’s commitment in promoting the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program—the premiere and flagship program of the University of the Philippines Visayas.

The event was organized through a strategic partnership with several key organizations, including the UPV Statistical Society, UP SILAB Sisterhood, and the UPV Ugnayan ng Pahinungod/Oblation Corps. Significant institutional support was provided by the UPV College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) Student Council, alongside the college’s constituent units: the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology, the Institute of Aquaculture, and the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Developmental Studies.

Furthermore, the initiative was bolstered by a collaboration with the UPV Biological Society. The organizers also extend their gratitude to the UP Ichthyophilic Society, UPV Libertas, and UPV Marketing Society Incorporated for their essential contributions and continued support of these endeavors.
