James Philgrey T. Lim, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry student from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), emerged as the top student of both CAS and the UPV Class of 2026, earning the highest weighted average grade (WAG) of 1.263. He will graduate magna cum laude during the University’s 47th Commencement Exercises on 10 July 2026 in Miagao, Iloilo.
When James entered UPV, his goal was simple: to do his best and graduate on time. Surrounded by some of the country’s brightest students, he never imagined that he would eventually become the top graduate of his college and the entire graduating class. Learning of the distinction was both humbling and overwhelming.
“I was overwhelmed with gratitude and fulfillment, as it affirmed that all the hard work and sacrifices I had made throughout the years had truly paid off—from the sleepless nights and skipped meals to the challenges and moments of self-doubt,” James shared. “Despite the increased pressure that comes with this achievement, I do not see this as the endpoint of my journey.”
Throughout his academic journey, James drew inspiration from his family. Their sacrifices fueled his determination to persevere and succeed.
“They have made countless sacrifices for me to study here in the Visayas and pursue my dreams,” he said. “As my parents are getting older, I feel an even stronger sense of urgency to finish my studies and build a stable career—not only to fulfill my aspirations but also to give back to them and help provide the comfortable life they deserve.”
Like many young Filipinos, James dreamed of becoming an Iskolar ng Bayan. His journey, however, was not without challenges. Although he was not admitted to his first-choice program, BS Biology, he was offered a slot in BS Chemistry—a turn of events that ultimately led him to discover his passion for the field.
Determined to make the most of the opportunity, he approached his studies with discipline, consistency, and dedication. For James, academic success was built not on extraordinary talent alone but on sustained effort and commitment.
Beyond the classroom, he embraced opportunities that enriched his university experience. Stepping outside his comfort zone, he joined the university performing group UPV Hublag, where he found a sense of community and formed meaningful connections with fellow students.
Reflecting on his journey, James offers a message to younger students: “My advice is not to define your success based on the expectations of others. Instead, focus on your own goals and values, and remember that progress, no matter how small, is still progress. There will also be challenges that you cannot overcome on your own, so never hesitate to seek help and learn from others when needed.”
After graduation, James plans to take the Chemist and Chemical Technician Licensure Examination. He also hopes to continue the research he began for his undergraduate thesis on Tawa-tawa, a local medicinal plant, while building professional experience and contributing meaningfully to the field of chemistry.
For James, being named the University’s top graduate is not the culmination of his efforts but the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of excellence, service, and discovery.
