SocSci students bring Kusog Babaylan to Lawigan National High School

“Kusog Babaylan, may kakayahan!” echoed throughout the covered gymnasium of Lawigan National High School San Joaquin Iloilo on the morning of March 25, 2026, as students gathered for an empowering seminar-workshop.

Aligned with the 2026 Philippine Commission on Women’s sub-theme for Women’s Month, the advocacy project was organized by the UP Visayas Social Science 5 (Understanding Gender) Section 7 class of Dr. Mary Barby P. Badayos-Jover. Eighty-one (81) female and male senior high school students of Lawigan National High School joined the activity, which was divided into mini-workshops. At the heart of the program was the idea of the Babaylan, precolonial Filipino women who were leaders, healers, and important members of the community. Inspired by their legacy, the event highlighted four roles that still influence people today.

The educational discussion, which focused on the Babaylan as keepers of knowledge, helped students understand women’s rights and roles in society. The arts and crafts activity showed the Babaylan as cultural preservers. Through creative work, students expressed their ideas about identity and culture. Strength and confidence were highlighted in the self-defense session. Here, participants learned basic techniques to protect themselves and stand up for their rights. The health and wellness segment focused on the Babaylan as healers. It taught students simple ways to take care of their mental and physical health, reminding them that well-being is important in their daily lives.

Guided by its main goals to empower, educate and reframe, the project created a safe and active space where students connect with their cultural roots while preparing them to face today’s challenges. More importantly, it reminds everyone that empowerment should not end with Women’s Month, but must be practiced every day in how we think, act, and treat others.

As the chant filled the gym, it carried a strong message – the spirit of the Babaylan lives on in every person who is ready to rise, lead, and make a difference in ensuring gender equality in our society.
