UPV library staff enhance skills with Buklod and Tuklas workshop-training

The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) library staff completed a three-day training workshop on the new library system, BUKLOD and TUKLAS, titled, “Moving Towards a Union Database of Library Resources and Integrated Services: Adopting and Implementing Next-Generation Library Systems Buklod and Tuklas.” Resource speakers from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) shared expertise through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities last January 20-22, 2026 at UPV Archives, Miagao campus.

The goal of the workshop was to equip library staff with the skills needed to effectively utilize the new library systems, enhancing services and resource management.

On the first day of training, Ms. Analiza S. Galang-Linaugo, UPV University Librarian, welcomed and introduced the speakers from UPD namely: Mr.Chito N. Angeles, Project Team Leader & Head of Information Technology Division; Ms. Michelle Ann G. Manalo-Eclar, Head Librarian, Strategic Communication, Research and Marketing Section; Mr. Anthony N. Atuel, Head Librarian, Cataloging and Metadata Services Section; Ms. Elizza Mae L. Jayag, Head Librarian, Technology Management Center Library; Katherine S. Nazareth, Head Librarian, Serials Section; and Mr. Martian A. Jinio, College Librarian, Information Technology Division.

Participants actively engaged in discussions and activities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the system’s features and applications. On day one, the training began with a lecture on the Introduction to Buklod & Tuklas. It was followed by lecture-demonstrations on effectively searching in Tuklas by using its various search features. Participants also took part in hands-on activities focused on cataloging library materials.

Day two involved checking-in and checking-out of library materials, alongside discussions and demonstrations on inventory management, as well as the Suri, another feature of Buklod.

On day three, staff delved into lecture-demo on serials. Throughout the three-day training, question and answer sessions were held, resulting in sharing of helpful tips and best practices aimed to enhance library services.

Mr. Angeles expressed his gratitude to the UPV library team for the warm accommodation, to the UP administration for the funding, and to his team for their dedication since 2020. He emphasized the value of working together to improve the library systems.

Tuklas is a resource discovery interface that replaced the Integrated Library System (iLib), the previous online public access catalog (OPAC), while Buklod is a library services platform that entailed a union catalog of library resources.

The same training was already conducted in the UP Baguio and UP Cebu. The training marked a significant step in the library’s commitment to innovation and excellence in information management.
