UPHSI celebrates "Linggo ng Wika"

It was a battle of talents and skills for the students of UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI), UP Visayas during the celebration of this year’s Linggo ng Wika. The celebration followed the theme, “Wika Natin ang Daang Matuwid”, which focuses on the significance of Filipino as the national language.
According to the president of the student organization, Kapisanan ng Panitikan at Wika (KAPWA) 2013, Earl John Cañonero, the celebration highlighted various competitions that focus on the culture, tradition and uniqueness of the Filipino language.
On August 22, 2013, the “Paindis-indis Bigkasan 2013-2014” was held at the UPV Little Theater. The Grade 7 and Grade 8 students competed in the “Sabayang Pagbigkas” while the Third Year and Fourth Year students vied in “Tulayaw” (tula, awit, sayaw) category.
The Literary Musical (LitMus) Contest was conducted on August 23 to showcase the students’ acting, singing, and dancing prowess. The competition categories included the following: Filipino declamation, oration, character impersonation, vocal solo pop, vocal solo classical, vocal duet pop, and samu’t saring sayaw. Students from all year levels participated in these contests.
KAPWA adviser, Prof. G. Noel de Leon in his message said that the essence of the celebration should remind the students of their role as Iskolar ng Bayan in promoting the Filipino language and highlighted its important cultural aspects.He also expressed his gratitude to the faculty and staff headed by UPHSI Principal, Prof. Rosario Dumagpi for supporting the event.
This year’s first prize winners for the different contests were: Grade 8-Tuburan for Sabayang Pagbigkas, IV-Ilawod for Tulayaw, Christine Nicole Jaco (IV- Ilawod) for declamation, Keanu Roland Alfred Ramos (IV-Ilaya) for oration, George Adrian Robledo (III-Lubi) for character impersonation, Angelika Grace Ferrer (IV-Ilawod) for classical, June Miles Trinidad (Grade 7-Kanlaon) for vocal solo pop, Camille Stephanie Guzman and Donita Guen Golmatico (Grade 8) for vocal duet pop, and third year representatives for the samut-saring sayaw.
The celebrations’ finale on September 2 will highlight the Mutya at Lakan ng High School with 16 candidates, eight pairs of boys and girls, competing for the title.
