Research Stations

Brackishwater Aquaculture Center (BAC)

Recognized as the national center for brackishwater aquaculture research, the BAC undertakes problem-oriented and development-oriented research based on national goals and priorities. Its facilities are adequate to support research programs and activities in aquaculture, ecology, fish diseases, fish nutrition, fish parasitology, processing, ichthyology, limnology, biological productivity and soil and water quality. The BAC has four laboratories which support programs and projects of research staff as well as faculty and graduate students of the Institue. These are equipped for research studies on pond ecology and management; fish nutrition, soil/water quality; and aquaculture engineering. There are 81 units of research ponds in the BAC complex. These are used for various studies conducted by the four laboratories.

Freshwater Aquaculture Station (FAS)

The FAS was established as a support facility of the research and academic functions of the Institute of Aquaculture. It envisions to be the center of excellence in academic and research activities in freshwater fisheries in the Visayas. For the last decade it concentrated in integrated income-generating projects which contributed though minimal to the income of the college. In addition, graduate and undergraduate students have been utilizing its facilities for some class activities especially special problems and practical works in growing fish. Research facilities include freshwater hatchery, fishonds (3.65 ha.), wet laboratory, and S&T laboratory.

Taklong Island National Marine Reserve (TINMAR)

The marine reserve is composed of Taklong and Tandog group of islands and surrounding islets covering an area of about 1,143.43 hectares. It was declared by Presidential Proclamation 525 signed by Pres. Corazon Aquino on February 8, 1990. The area was set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of the Filipino people and the primary purpose of its establishment is to protect and preserve the geological, scenic, scientific and education features of the areas including the marine resources therein. The TINMAR, where the UPV Marine Biological station is also located, was proclaimed to protect and preserve the aquatic environment. The establishment of a marine biological station in the Marine Reserve was to support the academic, research and training capabilities of the constituents of UPV as well as other instiutions who further aim for knowledge. It is also envisioned to cradle the marine science research in Western Visayas.

National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB)

To support the biotechnology research in the country, president Fidel V. Ramos, by virtue of Proclamation No. 526, created a network of biotechnology institutes within the University of the Philippines System. In accordance with this proclamation, the University of the Philippines Visayas established the UPV National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB).

The goal of NIMBB on the national level is to link the research priorities of the University to the development goals of the Philippine Government as to the aspects of increasing productivity through scientific research in the marine life sciences. It also aims to enhance the educational, research and extension mission of marine life sciences.
