Ms. Ethel Fatima Regla A. Sia, a BA Broadcast Communication IV student of the College of Arts and Sciences, Ms. Rizza Marie Joy J. Sia, a BS Accountancy IV student, and Office of Student Affairs Director, Prof. Geraldine N. Garcia, were selected as Philippine representatives to the First Academic Cooperation South East Asia Support Dialogue. The event was held in Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand on February 1-3, 2010.
The Academic Cooperation Europe-South-East Asia Support (ACCESS) Project started in 2009 and continued in 2010. Its purpose is to strengthen cooperation between higher education institutions from Europe and South East Asia (SEA) in a long-term and sustainable perspective. The project is supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Commission and explores the perceptions and expectations of South East Asian higher education stakeholders towards the European higher education system.
The Project also aims to promote meaningful higher education partnership schemes and supports dialogue processes revolving around common European and Southeast Asian higher education concerns.
Thus, the Project has scheduled three dialogues this year. The first one was attended by the UPV participants in Bangkok where they talked about Students Involvement in University Management. The second is scheduled in May 2010 in Manila. The dialogue will focus on “Physical and Virtual Mobility as an Instrument for Integration". The third one will in July 2010 in Indonesia and will focus on the “Challenges for South East Asia-Europe University Cooperation in the 21st Century".
In a nutshell, Prof. Garcia said that the Dialogue was meant to encourage the students to participate in the governance and management of their University. She observed that such practice already exists in UP wherein the students have a representation to the highest governing body of the University, the UP Board of Regents, through the Student Regent.
