BS Public Health Team Bakunawa bags 2nd straight National Unilab Ideas Positive Championship for UPV!

Team “Bakunawa” of UP Visayas composed of June Luis Salvador, Anna Nicole Cuachon, Bea Galupo, Precious Jemimah Legayada, Jason Clement Acebuque bagged the Unilab Ideas Positive Run 7 National championship on August 12, 2017.

Team Bakunawa was coined after the local word “bakuna” (immunization) and “unawa” (to understand). With Dr. Calvin de los Reyes as their mentor, the team was formed to do an intervention that aimed at increasing School-Based Immunization (SBI) in Pavia Ungka 2 Elementary School. Their 6-month social preparation and another 6-month work on empowering the school and barangay resulted in the reduction of school-based immunization refusal rate from 32% to zero% in that particular school.

Unilab Ideas Positive (UIP) started its national competition centered on awarding 100,000 pesos for a novel community health intervention program by the youth in 2012-2013 (run 1-2) which were limited to Metro Manila participants. In the national run, UPV teams consistently won 2nd place from runs 3-5 (2013-15) and then became national champions in run 6 (2016) under the mentorship of Dr. Philip Ian Padilla. Additionally, another UPV team bagged 3rd place in Run 4. Two more UPV teams made it to Run 6 as 3rd and 5th placers.

CFOS welcomes NKMU officials


The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) welcomed the officials of the National Kaohsiung Marine University (NKMU), Taiwan on September 5, 2017 at the UPV Miagao campus.

CFOS Dean Crispino A. Saclauso led in receiving the ten deegates of NKMU headed by its Acting President, Professor Syue-Sinn Leu. The visitors were accompanied by the staff of Manila Economic and Cultural Office spearheaded by its director, Mr. Cesar Drilon.

The visit was aimed to familiarize the visitors with the College, seek opportunities for faculty and student exchanges and academic collaborations, and explore possibilities of strengthening the relationship between Taiwan and the Philippines on fisheries and maritime related matters.

CFOS faculty members pursue graduate studies abroad

Three faculty members of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences went on study leave to pursue their graduate studies outside of the country starting this second half of 2017.

Ms. Rhoda Mae C. Simora, Ms. Cristy S. Acabado, and Mr. Jerry Ian L. Leonida were accepted as scholars in their chosen graduate program fields.

Chancellor Rommel A. Espinosa approved the requests of the three faculty members to go on study leave with pay in pursuit of a Ph.D. and Master’s degrees upon the recommendation of the UPV Academic Personnel and Fellowships Committee chaired by Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap.

Monteclaro participates in symposium workshop in Thailand and Japan

Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro, Director of the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS), College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas participated in the Oceans and Fisheries Partnership Regional Gender Workshop and Regional Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) Planning Workshop on August 20-23, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hosted by the United States Agency for International Development’s Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans), the workshop gathered program stakeholders to review findings from rapid appraisals for fisheries management conducted in the learning sites of the Philippines and Indonesia. Best practices and solutions for application in the regional fisheries were also discussed during the event.

Monteclaro presented the result of his study on gender analysis in the fisheries sector in the Philippines, specifically conducted in the General Santos area, for the Ocean and Fisheries Partnership.
