IFPDS conducts IEC campaign for management of marine sanctuary in Damilisan, Miagao

The Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS) conducted an information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign for the sustainable management and operation of the newly established marine protected area (MPA) on May 5 and May 13, 2017 at Brgy. Damilisan, Miagao, Iloilo.

The campaign sought to improve the community participation, disseminate information, and increase the level of awareness of the community on the importance and conservation of the MPA, prohibited activities and respective penalties through the conduct of the forum on May 5.

Faculty members of the IFPDS, namely Prof. Caridad N. Jimenez, Prof. Liberty N. Espectato, and Prof. Joshua Regalado served as the resource persons for technical information related to the marine sanctuary. The said MPA served as the learning site of the graduate students of the Master of Science Affairs of IFPDS this trimester. MMA students Kristine Bundal and Emy Mooc presented to the community their data from the biophysical assessment and focus group discussions. Four (4) tarpaulin signages on the prohibited activities as provided by the municipal ordinance in protecting the sanctuary were donated to the Barangay Council on May 13, 2017. These signages were translated in the local dialect.

The activities were participated by the community members, fisher folks, Barangay Council, and Marine Sanctuary Management Board of Brgy. Damilisan. (With reports from IFPDS)
