UPIC Alumni hold Grand Reunion

The graduates of UP Iloilo College (UPIC) from the classes of the 1950’s to the 70’s gathered last August 25, 2017 for the Grand UPIC Night held at Diversion 21 Hotel in Iloilo City. Associate in Arts 1957 Diamond Jubilarians spearheaded the event in collaboration with other alumni and former teachers. A number of jubilarians from abroad and other parts of the country came back home to be part of a series of events.

It was a night of laughter and remembrance. Pioneer alumni were given special honor by giving U.P. Medals. Prof. Corazon Defensor awarded the medals. The night was capped by dancing to the music of their time.

UPIC Night is part of the 2017 U.P. Alumni & Faculty Homecoming organized by UPV Office of Alumni Relations in partnership with UP Alumni Association (Iloilo Chapter) and other sponsoring alumni batches and organizations.

UP Alumni gather in 3-day Homecoming festivities

A huge number of university alumni from different years gathered from August 25-27, 2017 to celebrate their jubilee in UP VIsayas. The 2017 homecoming saw the participation of jubilarians and alumni, ranging from the recently graduated ones to graduates of 1952, in more than ten homecoming-related events.

The series of events kicked-off on August 25, 2017 with the annual homecoming mass organized by Scintilla Juris Fraternity and Stella Juris Sorority. This was followed by the launch of the book “The Social Helix,” and the election of members of the UP Alumni Association (Iloilo Chapter) board.

Sustainable Food Production highlighted at ICFAS 2017


“The Philippine poverty level has remained the same over the last 10 years while that of our Asian neighbours has gone down.”

This was the disturbing observation of Dr. William G. Padolina during his keynote address in the 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (ICFAS) on August 30, 2017 at Hotel Del Rio, Iloilo City. Padoilina based his observation from a compiled NSO data and ASEAN Statistical Report.

With the ICFAS 2017 theme, “Ridge to Reef: Strengthening Systems for Sustainable Food Production,” Padolina’s message couldn’t be more appropriate and fitting.

CFOS Scientist/Researcher attends short training at PERDC, Texas A & M University, USA

Dr. Erlinda S. Ganzon-Naret, Scientist 1 and Univ. Researcher of the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences attended the training course on Aquaculture Feed Extrusion and Nutrition and Feed Management on August 20-25, 2017 held at the Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, USA. The training was organized by the Process Engineering Research and Development Center (PERDC). The Alumni Grant was given by, Education for Nature (EFN) by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

This training course was attended by sixteen (16) participants coming from nine (9) different countries. Series of lectures were held at the Rudder Tower, Texas A & M University. The lectures primarily focused on the review of the current practices for the preparation of aquaculture feeds, aquaculture nutrition, and feed management practices.

The trainings also exposed the participants to multiple demonstrations on the use of different types of extruders, drying and cooling systems for aquaculture feeds, and use of NIR (Near Infra-Red) Analyzer on ingredients. Participants were also oriented with Aqua feed vacuum infusion, coating of aqua feeds, and the most recent processing technologies for effective selection and operation with the use extruders.
