Zumba is back in UPV

In its continued advocacy for a healthier UPV, the UPV Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Committee (UPV WellComm) has revived the weekly Zumba in the Iloilo City and Miagao campuses starting June this year.

Recent studies such as those done by the Mayo Clinic says that “sitting is the new smoking.” The same study warns that “sedentary life is not only linked to weight problems but also poses greater risks of cancer and heart diseases.”

It studied the sitting habits of 800,000 people over a 15-year period. Its findings revealed that people who sat in front of the screen for more than four hours have increased risks of death by any cause by 50% and risks of heart attack, chest pain or similar ailments by 125%.

UPV office employees, who sit in front of the computer eight hours a day, five days a week, sit while travelling to and from work, and sit while watching TV at the end of the day are truly having a sedentary lifestyle.

UPV WellComm hopes that the desk-bound employees, even the students and the faculty, would join the hour-long Zumba for a chance to exercise and fight off the sedentary lifestyle.

Though held only every Tuesdays at 3:30-4:30 pm at the Iloilo City campus and Thursdays at the Miagao campus, WellComm hopes that it would be a start to get the community into a regular habit of exercising. Certified Zumba Instructor Rommel Deala has been booked by the Committee to lead the sessions until the end of the year.

The WellComm welcomes suggestions from the UPV community on health, fitness, and wellness programs that might be incorporated in its program of activities.
