Three undergraduate students from Taiwan are spending part of their summer as exchange students at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) Miagao campus.
The students are from the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), a national university in Zhongzheng District, Keelung, Taiwan, for their immersive internship at the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT) from July 12 to September 2, 2022.
The College, through the IFPT, held an opening ceremony last July 18, 2022, at the AV Hall. CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap and IFPT director Assoc. Prof. Sharon N. Nuñal welcomed the foreign students.
The interns were introduced to the faculty and staff that they will be working with throughout the duration of their internship. They were also briefed about their stay at the University, including the different activities that they will work on.
Asst. Prof. Lhumen Tejano, faculty-in-charge of the NTOU Internship Program, presented the various research projects on post-harvest fisheries being undertaken by IFPT that the foreign students will immerse themselves in the next two months.
The student interns started working on the refinement of post-harvest technology for select fishery products. They had hands-on experience in techno-demo training, process optimization, sensory analysis and/or consumer acceptability tests of select fishery products.
In the coming weeks, they will be conducting food safety and toxicity tests of products for protein hydrolysates from marine species. They will be exposed to the production of fish protein hydrolysates from tuna viscera.
Moreover, the students will participate in a study to characterize mussel bioactive lipids and proteins. They will also have the opportunity to visit fish processing industries in Panay Island and Mindanao.
The students are the third batch of exchange students from NTOU for an internship at CFOS. (With sources from IFPT)
