Mga Sugidanon sang Tumandok (Narratives of the Native): Paintings by RF Salditos opened on 4 April 2017 at the UP Visayas Art Gallery in Iloilo City.
Salditos, whose forays into the mountainous areas of Panay got him interested in local lore, created over 20 paintings in mixed media to capture these stories in tangible form.
His main source was Lola Elena Gardoce, a binukot. She was one of several women who were secluded and specially assigned to serve as transmitters of epic traditions. Lola Elena was awarded by the Cultural Center of the Philippines the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1992.
Salditos who also writes poetry, includes in this collection two large canvases of excerpted transcriptions of the recorded narratives along with two other large canvases of his own thoughts on the significance of the narratives to people’s struggle for a just society.
Mga Sugidanon sang Tumandok (Narratives of the Native): Paintings by RF Salditos runs until 31 May 2017. Vernissage will be at 6 PM on 4 April 2017. UPV Art Gallery is at the Main Building of UP Visayas Iloilo City Campus. Gallery hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. (UPV-CCCA)
