ABOUT CFOS

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) of the University of the Philippines Visayas is at the forefront of fisheries education in the country. Over the years, the College has instituted degree programs that address the need for sustainable development of the country’s fisheries resources and respond to the call for highly trained manpower in the field. Its curricular offerings, both in the graduate and undergraduate levels, aim to impart theoretical knowledge and practical skills, as well as to develop analytical capabilities as tools toward innovative approaches and solutions to fisheries and related problems to students.

It also actively engages in research to address issues and concerns in aquaculture, marine fisheries, fish processing, and fisheries policy. The public services offered by CFOS cater to varied clientele groups in terms of technical assistance, consultancy, technology dissemination and verification, conduct of training and workshops, and production of IEC materials.

Bachelor of Science in Fisheries

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), University of the Philippines Visayas provides quality fisheries education and produces graduates who are among the best in the discipline.
It has been identified by CHED as one of the Higher Education Institute which will serve as the National University / College of Fisheries (NUCF) for Region VI under the National Agriculture and Fisheries Education System (NAFES).
CFOS graduates consistently dominate the top 10 passers in the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC) Fisheries Technologists Licensure Examinations. The College has the highest passing rates among the different fisheries schools in the country.

The curricular offerings of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences are administered through its four Institutes.

Program Goal

The Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (BSF) program offers a holistic curriculum that aims to provide quality and relevant training in fisheries. A graduate of this program is expected to understand and ably apply various principles and techniques for sustainable fisheries. The program trains the student to assume a critical role in planning for fisheries development at the local and national levels through the application of various principles and techniques for sustainable fisheries.

Curricular Framework

The BS Fisheries Program requires the completion of 144-150 units with a thesis or non-thesis option. It consists of 138 units of required courses (including 39 units of General Education courses) and 10-13 units of elective courses.
The thesis track is designed for students who may opt to take advanced studies or pursue a career related to research. The non-thesis option requires a special problem course including practicum, which is designed for students who prefer to work in the industry, government, or non-government organizations.

The CFOS has a core of well-trained faculty members who are among the best in the country. One hundred percent of its faculty members have graduate degrees (PhD and/or MS) in the fields of:

Admission Requirements

An applicant to the BS Fisheries Program must be a high school graduate and has passed the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT).

Financial Assistance

Scholarship grants from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Agriculture Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), SANTEH Feeds Inc., Takahito Kojima and other private corporations/agencies and/or individuals are available to qualified applicants. The university also provides financial assistance to students in the form of loans and the Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance Program (STFAP).

Linkages

The College has forged linkages with foreign universities such as the Kagoshima University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Gyeongsang National University, Dalhousie University and many others. These linkages provide opportunities for students of the BSF program to study abroad through student exchange programs, or to pursue graduate studies in these universities.
