Department of Chemistry brings the 2017 Chem Tournament to the Negros Island Region
The Department of Chemistry in partnership with UPV Chemistry Society and C&E Publishing, Inc., held the 2017 Chem Tournament – Negros Island Region League on April 1, 2017 at Bago City Elementary School, Negros Occidental.
Dr. Ma. Ana C. Ebon, Education Program Supervisor I (Science) of DepEd Division of Bago City, welcomed the participants; while Dr. Roy B. Basa, Science Supervisor of DepEd Negros Island Region gave the opening remarks. A total of 60 Grade 9 students with their coaches from 15 secondary schools in the Negros Island Region joined the tournament. The Team, composed of Dr. Vivian A. Topor as Overall Chair, Ms. Janica G. Divinagracia, president of the UPV Chemistry Society (Lead Facilitator), along with faculty, staff, and ChemSoc facilitators were welcomed by Hon. Nicolas M. Yulo, Mayor of Bago City. He shared his enthusiasm for more UPV-Bago City-DepEd future collaborations.
The games that were played in the 2017 Chem Tournament were: ChemTrump, ChemPuzzle, ChemSearch, and ChemFactor. These were developed by Dr. Vivian A. Topor to make learning of chemistry fun, exciting and enjoyable, and therefore correcting students’ misconception that chemistry is a difficult subject.
The winners listed by school were as follows: For ChemTrump, Don Bosco Technical Institute - 1stplace, Ramon Torres Louisiana National High School - 2nd place, and Ramon Torres Malingin National High School - Atipulan Extension - 3rd place. For ChemPuzzle, Ramon Torres National High School - 1st place, Mansilingan Agro-Industrial National High School - 2nd place, Isabela National High School - 3rd place. For Chem Search, Ramon Torres National High School - 1st place, Ramon Torres Dulao National High School - 2nd place and Isabela National High School - 3rd. Place. For ChemFactory, Bocana National High School - 1st place, followed by Isabela National High School - 2nd place and Ramon Torres Ma-ao Sugar Central National High School - 3rd place.
All the winners received cash prizes, and certificates and plaques of recognition. The cash prizes were sponsored by Prof. Edna Callejas-Mijares of the Callejas-Mijares Scholarship Foundation and the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines–Bacolod Chapter. The Department of Chemistry is grateful for the support of DepEd Division of Bago City through its Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Ma. Lorlinie M. Ortillo, who arranged the venue and provided the accommodation for the Chem Tournament facilitators.
